John has no known grave but is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial. He is a former pupil of Grove Academy, Broughty Ferry and is remembered on the schools war memorial.

John is the brother of 2nd Lieutenant William Sutherland, M.M. 7th Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers, who was killed in action 07.10.1918. His sister is also recorded as residing at Windsor Tce, Brook St, Broughty Ferry.
