More about Thomas Angus

According to Deaths at Sea Records and the 1915 Crew Lists Thomas Angus was born in Dundee. The SS Borrowdale went missing after sailing from Cardiff, on 21 January 1915 bound for Granville in France, with a cargo of coal. The London Times said it was feared the ship had been sunk by a submarine. Thomas Angus is presumed to have drowned but no further details of the ship have been confirmed. However, extensive searches of First World War German U Boat records do not provide any indications that U Boats were operating in the vicinity of the Borrowdale. The English Channel was afflicted by a severe storm during the time of the Borrowdale’s passage and this is the most likely cause of her loss. Some records show that 15 died in the sinking but the 1915 crew lists show only five names. As the loss was not caused by enemy action their names are not on the Tower Hill Memorial in London.
