More about William B. Anderson

  1. B. Anderson   Black Watch

“IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN WORSE.”

Mr and Mrs Anderson, 9 Carnegie Street, Dundee, have had several letters from their son, Private W. B. Anderson, 4th Black Watch, bearing the address of La Plage Hospital, stating that he has been wounded by shrapnel in the left leg, and that it is not serious.

In a letter written the day after he was wounded, Private Anderson states that about 5.30 the previous night the “beloved baby-killers” started shelling the reserve trenches which the “Fourth” were occupying, and one of the shells burst behind the writer and other two members of the Battalion who happened to be just outside the trench at the time.  “Luckily the other two escaped,” continues the Territorial, “and it might have been a lot worse for me.”

Twenty-one years of age, Private Anderson joined the Territorials on the outbreak of war, and was formerly employed as a boiler-coverer in Glasgow.  His cousin, Private Walter Rae, 4 Ellen Street, also of the 4th Black Watch, was killed in action about four weeks ago.
