More about John William Wheatley

John W Wheatley was the son of Mr John and Mrs Eleanor Wheatley and was born in Dundee. He was the husband of Mrs Davina Wallace Wheatley of 38 Cowgate, Tayport. He volunteered to join the Royal Naval Reserve at the Customs House in Dundee on 9 November 1916. His first draft was to HMS Excellent in Portsmouth and then HMS Gibraltar, an old cruiser used as a Depot Ship for the 10th Cruiser Squadron of the Northern Patrol and based in Shetland. In January 1917 he returned to Dundee serving with the Royal Naval Officer organisation based in Dundee Harbour. His next draft in September was to HMS Gunner, the Naval Base at Granton Harbour, Edinburgh and he was assigned to HM Trawler Pelagos. John Wheatley died from emphysema and nephritis at Granton Naval Hospital, Edinburgh and is buried in the Tayport Cemetery. Address also given as 49 Victoria Road, Dundee. The Dundee City Roll of Honour lists few details in entry D4099 but his ship is listed as HMS Pelagos. The Pelagos was also requisitioned in 1940 and served through the Second World War.
