More about William Doig

For reasons unknown this man is not listed on the original Dundee Roll of Honour.

On 20 August 1915, The Courier reported on the service of another Dundee family.

CASUALTIES IN PATRIOTIC DUNDEE FAMILY. (1) Trooper Robert Doig; (2) Trooper David Doig; (3) Saddler William Doig; (4) Private William Wesbster, sen.; (5) Private William Webster, jun. One out of three Dundee brothers with the colours has been wounded, while their uncle paid the supreme price on the battlefield.
The parents of the patriotic brothers are Mr and Mrs David Doig, 25 Mid Road, Dundee, who have received the following letter regarding their son, Trooper Robert Doig, 10th Hussars, from the troop officer: – “I am sorry to tell you that your son was hit by a shell. He was hit above the eye, and as yet it is impossible to say how bad the wound is. The doctor assures me there is no danger, and at present the sight has not been affected, though, of course, it is impossible to say how the wound will develop. I am his troop officer, and am naturally extremely sorry to lose him, especially as he is a trained soldier and very valuable in the troop.” Trooper Doig, who is 25 years of age, has been eight years in the army, which he spent in South Africa and India. He has not been home since he enlisted.
David Doig, who is 22 years of age, has served as a trooper with the Royal Scots Greys for four years. He went amissing shortly after the battle of Mons, but was later picked up by the 1st Signalling Squadron, to which he is now attached.
Mrs Doig’s youngest son, Saddler William Doig, R.F.A., is 19 years of age. He enlisted at the New Year.
The uncle of the brothers was Private Wm Webster, 2d Black Watch, who was killed on 28th March. A native of Dundee, he enlisted in October, and was previously employed as a miner in Methil. He is survived by a widow and seven of a family, the oldest of whom, William, is a private in the 7th Black Watch. He has been in France, and was reported killed by a comrade, but later a letter was received from himself stating he was in hospital suffering from appendicitis.
Mrs Doig’s son-in-law, Private L. Reid, 4th Black Watch, is at present in France. His wife also resides at 25 Mid Road. The Courier, Friday, 20 August 1915, 6.

William Doig   R.F.A.

Doig, R.F.A., was the son of Mr and Mrs Doig, 25 Mid Road, Dundee.  He was 22 years of age, and after enlisting in 1914 was sent to Salonika, and later transferred to France.  He had two brothers serving.  Previous to enlistment he was employed by Harry Walker & Sons, Ltd., manufacturers, Dundee.
