Charles originally attested under the name of Charles Cargill. When Charles enlisted, his wife was residing at 35 Lawrence St, Dundee. According to his service record His father is recorded as C. Young and his mother is recorded as Agnes Young and his wife is recorded as Margaret Rollo Young. The names of his parents and wife listed above are those recorded on the C.W.G.C. and V.A.C. sites.

Charles is believed to have initially attested 18.01.1915 with the 33rd Battalion, Canadian Infantry, Reg No A390, before being medically discharged 17.04.1915. It would appear he then re enlisted initially with the 19th Battalion before being transferred to the Canadian Engineers.
