A direct hit
While working a long shift treating men arriving directly from battle, shells began to land closer and closer to the Clearing Station. Then it happened. A shell struck just yards from the treatment shed blowing a wide hole in a wall and sending shrapnel and debris in all directions. The air was thick with dust, the smell of explosives and burnt flesh.
