Having just returned to service after running aground in the River Forth, Warspite suffered further damage when she collided with her sister ship HMS Barham. A superior officer overheard Martin blaming the Captain and he narrowly escaped a charge. After repairs the Warspite rejoined the Grand Fleet on Christmas Eve.
