More about James Balfour Dunn

For reasons unknown this man is not listed on the original Dundee Roll of Honour. He was the brother of Pte John Dunn 225192, 10th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders, who died of wounds 10.12.1916.

James Balfour Dunn   Second Lieutenant   Royal Air Force

Major John Dunn, science master, Morgan Academy, after months of anxiety as to the fate of his son, Lieut. James Dunn, Royal Air Force, has received the good news that the Lieutenant will be home again.  A former Morgan Academy pupil, Lieut. Dunn was well known in the Maryfield district.  His brother John was killed whilst serving with the Scottish Horse in the Balkans.

Dundee People’s Journal 18th January 1919

James Balfour went straight from our school to the Air Force, where he earned the highest praise from all who knew him. One tells how”he captured, single-handed, a German aeroplane with a pilot who had 16 French aeroplanes to his credit”. Lt Dunn was awarded both the BritishWar Medal and the Victory Medal. James was one of two sons of Major John Dunn, Royal Army Medical Corps who retired “a few years ago” from the position of head of the Science Department at Morgan Academy.

James was killed in action whilst piloting DH4 D8356.
